Member Services Director for the Virginia Press Association

This role focuses on leading and managing membership services at the Virginia Press Association (VPA), including, but not limited to: conference and meeting planning; sponsor and membership development; professional development and training, association management support and foundation board support. Responsible for increasing revenue from sponsorships and memberships and creating outstanding member and sponsor experiences with the aim that existing members and sponsors will continue to support VPA and new members and sponsors will be attracted to VPA’s offerings.
Position reports to the Executive Director and supervises the Membership Services Manager.
Candidates with association experience are strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities:


• In consultation with executive director and the professional development and awards committees: develop and implement the VPA annual conference and awards contest banquet including securing sponsors, working with outside vendors, marketing the events and driving attendance.
• Provide event logistics and set-up, including event registration and reminders as well as creation and coordination of post-event follow up and satisfaction surveys.
• Work with hotels and other venues in negotiating contracts, conducting site inspections, managing invoices and budgets.


• Work with the executive director and the professional development and awards committees to plan and implement professional development program for members.
• Develop professional development budget and schedule.
• Secure presenters and instructors for each professional development offering.
• Survey members to determine professional development and training needs for newspaper managers, editorial and advertising staffs.
• Act as liaison between the conference program and professional development committees to make sure training offerings are planned in tandem.
• Create new professional development program to replace former ‘Newspaper Academy’ using multiple platforms – digital, in-person, live streaming, micro-learning, etc.


• Create and implement annual memberships services plan that includes assessment of current membership benefits and identifies new and improved benefits.
• Identify potential sponsors for various events and sell event sponsorships.
• Maintain conference, training and award status reports and meet with the executive director and communications manager to collaborate on progress and marketing strategies.
• Manage annual awards (editorial and advertising) contest and coordinate entries, judging and follow-up.


• Manage the association’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software.
• Work in partnership with the communications manager to maintain the association’s website (content, quality control) as it relates to membership, events, and the foundation.
• Manage webinars and streaming technology in partnership with the communications manager.


• 4-year college degree or equivalent experience. Master’s degree preferred.
• Association management experience including meeting/event planning, membership development, and professional development classes and training sessions.
• Familiar with Adult Learning Theory and best training program practices.
• Highly professional and positive individual who is an effective communicator and comfortable working on and leading teams – including staff and vendor teams.
• Attention to detail, ability to manage multiple priorities and strong work ethic.
• Experience working with CRMs and webinar software.
• Advanced computer skills, proficiency with the Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite, and substantial database experience
