Joel Walter Turner, 74, of Roanoke, Va., died on Sunday, March 27, 2016. He was predeceased by his parents, Kent Kera and Angie Brown Turner.He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Patricia Kelly Turner; one daughter, Camille Turner of Roanoke; three brothers, Nathan Turner (Jessie) of Wirtz, Elonza Turner of Wirtz, and James Turner (Betty Jo) of Kingwood, Texas; and one sister, Robin Turner Cooper (Bill) of Wirtz.Joel was a Franklin County native and a graduate of the University of Virginia (UVA). He retired as a reporter for The Roanoke Times after 33 years, having worked in the Staunton and Salem bureaus and covering Roanoke City government and Roanoke Valley Schools. He later spent seven years as a reporter for The Franklin News-Post, Rocky Mount.He was an avid sports fan, particularly UVA football/basketball, NASCAR, a political news junkie and runner. Joel ran several marathons before being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy.A Memorial Service will be held at noon on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at Southview United Methodist Church, 3539 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, Va., with the Rev. David V. Ford officiating. Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. preceding the service at the church. Burial will be private.Oakey's North Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
