Longtime Harrisonburg sports editor Chris Simmons dies at 61

From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

HARRISONBURG — Chris Simmons, sports editor of the Daily News-Record in Harrisonburg for the past 31 years, has died. He was 61.

Simmons died Thursday. No information was available on the cause of his death.

Peter Yates, the newspaper’s general manager, said Simmons was “superbly skilled as a writer, an editor and a designer.” But he said Simmons’ greatest legacy is his talent as a mentor to dozens of accomplished journalists across the country who honed their craft under his tutelage.

The Colville, Wash., native earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from West Virginia University in 1977 and began work as a wire editor at the Harrisonburg newspaper in 1978. He became a news reporter two months later and was promoted to sports editor in 1985.
