Richard Edward Griffin, 90, of Chesterfield, died May 30, 2016. He was a retired newspaper writer and editor, and spent his entire career with the Richmond Times-Dispatch, retiring in 1991. He was born in Richmond on March 22, 1926. After a three-year stint in the U.S. Marine Corps, Edward attended The College of William and Mary, graduating in 1948. He worked, beginning as a copy boy, for The Times-Dispatch, with a break of six years (1963 to 1970) that he spent in Germany with his family. There, he was a correspondent for the Stars and Stripes newspaper, a publication for American military personnel overseas. Edward was an avid reader and a serious student of history. He enjoyed a good bottle of Riesling, French cooking and travel. Above all, he loved the language and cared very much about "getting it right."
