Sylvia Costen, retired editor of the Richmond News Leader People section, dies at 93

Sylvia Ann Costen, retired editor of the now defunct Richmond News Leader People section, died May 26 at the age of 93.

After spending two years as a school teacher in Woodstock, Costen joined the Danville Register & Bee from 1943 to 1945. She earned a master's degree from the Columbia University School of Journalism in New York City. 

She then returned to Richmond when she accepted a position at the Richmond News Leader as a women's reporter and editor from 1947 to 1986.

An avid traveler, she visited every continent and many countries, including sleeping in a tree-house in Annapurna, Nepal and sleeping on an ice bed in the Arctic.
