FOIA panel delays action on draft open meeting exemption for personnel

A subcommittee reviewing meeting exemptions in Virginia's Freedom of Information Act on Tuesday postponed action on drafted changes to the personnel exemption to open meetings law.

The draft, discussed for nearly 30 minutes, would allow government bodies to go into closed session to discuss the performance, demotion, salaries, disciplining or resignation of "all officers, appointees, and employees of the locality."

Bill to study FOIA exemptions advances in Senate subcommittee

A Senate subcommittee on Tuesday morning advanced a bill that would direct the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council to review all 172 exemptions contained in the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

The four-member Senate Rules Subcommittee #1 unanimously voted to report House Joint Resolution 96 from Del. James M. LeMunyon, R-Fairfax, to the full Senate Rules Committee.

Sunshine Week set for March 16-22

Sunshine Week, the annual national initiative focusing on open government, is scheduled for March 16-22.

"Anyone -- not just media organizations -- can utilize the resources, have their events listed or be included as participants," ASNE's First Amendment Programs and Partnerships Committee Co-Chairs Lucy Dalglish and Steve Engelberg said in a statement.
