Richard C. Bayer, former Pilot reporter and editor, dies

NORFOLK - Richard C. Bayer, a retired reporter, editor and writing coach for The Virginian-Pilot, died Sunday. He was 82.

Pat Richardson honored for distinguished service by MDDC

Pat Richardson, publisher of The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, was honored in May with the 2014 Distinguished Service Award by the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association.

Prior to joining The Pilot, she was the publisher of the Annapolis Capital and Carroll County Times. During her tenure there, she established the Press Services Board to guide revenue generation and brought her sales expertise to bear on behalf of the MDDC.

She joined 10 individuals who have received the Distinguished Service Award since its inception in 2004.

McDaniels, Gray win outstanding sales professional awards

The Outstanding Sales Professional of the Year Award was presented to Helene McDaniels of Hermes Publications Saturday night at the annual meeting of the Virginia Press Association in Roanoke. 

Holland, Evans win outstanding journalist awards

The Outstanding Journalist of the Year Award was presented to John Holland of The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, on Saturday at the annual meeting of the Virginia Press Association in Roanoke. 

VPA honors outstanding journalists, sales professionals

The honorees were Scott Matthew of the Courier-Record in Blackstone, outstanding young sales professional of the year; Mitzi Lusk of The Tidewater News in Franklin, outstanding sales professional of the year; Mike Hixenbaugh of The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, outstanding young journalist of the year; and Roz Helderman of The Washington Post, outstanding journalist of the year.

Virginia Supreme Court rules in favor of The Virginian-Pilot

The Supreme Court of Virginia last week upheld a lower court's ruling that struck down a $3 million libel verdict against The Virginian-Pilot and is being hailed as a major win for newspapers and journalism.
