Associate Membership

The VPA bylaws define an Associate member as the following:

  1. Scientific, legal, medical, educational, religious, fraternal, trade or other publications which have an average non-advertising content of 25 percent or more and that are published for the public in Virginia as often as four times per year may apply for associate membership. These publications include free circulation newspapers, unless they are required to apply for Active membership under Section 1f. above. 
  2. Colleges, foundations, associations and public institutions may apply for associate membership if they are interested in fostering their relationship with the press. 
  3. The Virginia Associated Press may also apply for associate membership. 
  4. An associate member shall pay dues and shall be entitled to all privileges of the association except those of voting and holding office. 
  5. Each associate membership shall be reviewed at the summer meeting of the board of directors for approval of membership for the ensuing year.

Individual Membership

Apply for Membership: Sustaining members shall consist of those formerly affiliated with an active member newspaper, or with an associate member publication, or with an affiliate member who desire to contribute to the welfare of the association and to attend its meetings. A sustaining member shall pay dues and shall be entitled to all the privileges of the association except those of voting or holding office.

Educational Institution Membership

Apply for Membership: Educational Institution Memberships are open to all Virginia college, university, and public or private secondary school mass communications departments and/or media relations offices interested in fostering their relationships with the press. Educational members' dues are $200. Fifteen percent of annual membership dues go toward one-year subscriptions to the quarterly VPA trade newspaper, Virginia's Press.

Online Membership

Apply for Membership: Online Membership is open to online publications that have been published for at least 12 months before application, using recognized standards of professional journalism, and are principally devoted to the dissemination of local or general news with at least 50 percent of all editorial (non-ad) content reported and original. Annual dues for Online Publications/Newspapers are $425. Fifteen percent of annual membership dues go toward one-year subscriptions to the quarterly VPA trade newspaper, Virginia’s Press.

Affiliate Membership

Apply for membership: Affiliate Memberships are open to businesses or associations that sell newspaper supplies, equipment or services. Affiliate members' dues are an amount equal to the number of full-time Virginia employees, with a minimum of $250 and a maximum of $500. Fifteen percent of annual membership dues go toward one-year subscriptions to the quarterly VPA trade newspaper, Virginia's Press.

Active (or Regular) Membership

Apply for Membership: Active (or Regular) Membership in the VPA is open to any bona fide daily or weekly newspaper of general circulation published in Virginia and holding a U.S. Postal Service publications class mailing permit. Border state newspapers (those actively seeking and servicing subscribers in Virginia, providing regular staff coverage of Virginia affairs and including Virginia as part of their market) are also eligible for regular membership. Regular Membership is the only membership category entitled to vote and to hold office in the association. Free distribution newspapers may be eligible for active membership if they meet the criteria set forth in the VPA's bylaws.
